Carew Park gets paved walking and cycling trail

Press Release Carew Park
Lindsay, Ontario September 26, 2011

Carew Park TrailThe Kawartha Lakes Green Trails Alliance is pleased to announce that its Ontario Trillium Foundation grant application has been approved for $38,400 and construction work on the new accessible trail in Carew Park along Colbourne Street East adjacent to the Scugog River has started. The grant requires the Green Trails Alliance to contribute volunteer labour and other in-kind contributions to make this project happen. Bill Steffler President of KLGTA states: “ we are very happy to have this grant approved and will do our share to make this section of trail a benefit to the residents who live nearby and everyone.”  In addition the City of Kawartha Lakes, Parks and Recreation Department Capital Development grant program has provided $7,500 towards the cost of landscaping and a unique pavement stencil design at the William Street North Legacy Trail kiosk. The pavement stencil design shows the conversion of two railway lines at Victoria Junction (Legacy Trail kiosk). This historic site was an intersection of two major rail lines in Lindsay.  Barb MacPherson Vice President of KLGTA states: “ trails are more than recreation they can contribute to recognizing our heritage and our past and this a unique way of doing this.”

This project will contribute towards the "Kawartha Greenway" vision of the Kawartha Lakes Green Trails Alliance. The Greenway is a vision of a continuous green trail corridor for walking and cycling to Ken Reid Conservation Area from Lindsay. This is the second major trail construction project contributing to this vision done by Green Trails Alliance. The work at Carew Park when completed will include a 225 metre length of paved trail, 3 metres wide.  Funds will also be used at the Legacy Trail kiosk for landscaping and pavement marking.

The Kawartha Lakes Green Trails Alliance is a not for profit organization that focuses on providing active transportation trail opportunities.  The completed greenway corridor will provide a quiet, healthy, and safe connection between many adjacent or nearby neighborhoods, community facilities, and natural areas. It will also connect with the Kawartha Trans Canada Trail.
